IPE Docks

Ipe, an extremely dense wood that grows in the tropical forests of Central and South America, provides the highest durability rating (25 plus years) from the U.S. Forest Products Lab. It has a Class 1 UBC (uniform building code) fire rating, which is the same as steel and concrete. Ipe hardwood is twice as strong as oak, three times as strong as cedar or redwood and ten times stronger than plastic. Ipe hardwood weighs approximately twice as much as oak and four to five times heavier than cedar or redwood. It weighs approximately 6 pounds per board foot with a 12 percent to 14 percent moisture content.

It is air dried for most uses, which produces only slight checking, warping and shrinkage. It is olive brown to blackish color, sometimes with lighter or darker striping and proves very resistant to attack by decay, fungi and termites.
